The former Magpies defender has given his take on the summer transfer window.

Former Newcastle United star Jose Enrique has identified one current member of Eddie Howe’s squad that should be sold to ease the Magpies battle with the Premier League’s profit and sustainability regulations.

There have been recent reports suggesting United will have to sell one player before the end of June to comply with the regulations and avoid following the examples set by league rivals Everton and Nottingham Forest, who were both handed points deductions in recent months after posting sizeable financial losses. However, although those claims have been dismissed, there will be a need for Newcastle to move on several members of their squad as they look to boost Howe’s ranks in a bid to challenge for European football once again next season.

Key players such as influential midfielder Bruno Guimaraes and top goalscorer Alexander Isak have been linked with big money moves to the likes of Manchester City, Liverpool and Arsenal in recent months - but former Magpies defender Enrique believes his old club could take advantage of Saudi Arabia Pro League interest in Miguel Almiron to ease any financial concerns.

He told Grosvenor Sport: “Miguel Almiron has been linked with a move to the Saudi Pro League, and unlike Guimarães and Isak, he might be more ready to leave. While Almiron has been a fantastic player for Newcastle with an excellent work rate, his form has dipped recently. The season before last, he was sensational, but now Newcastle have an opportunity to get a good fee for him. Almiron is more replaceable than Guimarães and Isak – who are world-class in their positions. Selling Almiron could help with financial fair play regulations and provide funds for a replacement. Although I would prefer him to stay, he seems the best option to leave compared to Guimarães and Isak.”

Enrique, who helped Newcastle to the Championship title in 2010, did hand a transfer warning to his old club after claiming they will face ‘a tough decision’ over the future of midfielder Guimaraes if one of the Premier League’s top clubs is willing to make an offer for the Brazil star.

He said: “I believe any top-tier club could show interest in Bruno Guimarães, including the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City. However, I don't think Guimarães will pressure Newcastle United for a transfer. The fans adore him, and understandably so, but it's also clear why he might consider moving to a club with better chances of winning trophies. For Newcastle, the goal is to finish in the top four again next season. This is a realistic target, but it doesn't guarantee silverware, which might make Guimarães consider a move for immediate success.

“As a former Newcastle player, I would love to see him remain because he is an exceptional player and crucial to the club's success. However, if a substantial offer comes in, Newcastle will face a tough decision. Due to financial fair play regulations, the club might welcome a significant sum for such a talent, but it would have to be the right amount.”
