Alexander Isak bagged his 11th international strike as Sweden were undone 2-1 by bitter rivals Denmark.

Newcastle United’s record signing has a summer off as his nation failed to qualify for Euro 2024 later this month. A disastrous qualifying campaign saw Sweden finish third - behind Belgium and Austria - meaning they will watch from home for the first time since 1996.

But the Swedes still had pride on the line when they faced footballing nemesis Denmark - a side competing in Group C alongside England. The Three Lions are set to face Denmark, a repeat of the Euro 2020 semi-final, on June 20 in Frankfurt.

However, Isak’s men came unstuck, with Christian Eriksen’s late strike sealing a 2-1 win. The Newcastle talisman had equalised on eight minutes after Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg gave Denmark a rapid lead.

Isak showed the same instinctive abilities that saw him bag 25 goals for the Magpies last season by reacting quickly inside the area to smash a left-footed shot past Frederik Ronnow. That strike took his international tally to 11 goals from 45 games - numbers he will be looking to improve on in the coming years.

Just hours earlier, Isak declared his “love” for Newcastle when grilled about ongoing transfer speculation. He said: “I’m really, really happy at Newcastle. I had the best season of my career. You can’t underestimate that. I love everything about the club, the fans and the city.

“It (my future) is not something I will speculate about. I don’t really have any thoughts of moving or anything like that. I’m having a great time and I’m very happy with my life. There has been no talk about it at the club and I have received no information that they would have to sell me.”
