Newcastle United have proudly boasted many South American stars - and are linked with another Brazilian sensation

Newcastle United are weighing up a move for Gremio sensation Nathan Fernandes, according to reports.

Toon fans are no strangers to South American flair over the years. George and Ted Robledo shone for the Magpies in the 1950s when few teams had a foreign player within their ranks.

The 1990s saw Tino Asprilla become a Newcastle cult hero for his iconic hat-trick against Barcelona. More recent times have seen the likes of Nobby Solano, Jonas Gutierrez and Fabricio Coloccini become fans’ favourites despite not possessing world-class ability.

St James’ Park is now emblazoned with the green and yellow of Brazil given Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton’s current adulation. The duo have struck up an unwavering bond since Guimaraes joined from Lyon in January 2022.

That relationship has been shared with Newcastle supporters - who revere both players like one of their own. Reports in Brazil now claim another Brazilian could be about to join the Saudi-backed revolution on Tyneside.

Portal do Gremista claim the Magpies are keeping tabs on Gremio prodigy Fernandes. As it stands, the two clubs’ valuation remains way off, with Newcastle facing an £18million price tag.

Toon chiefs believe Fernandes is worth less than half that and are governed by FFP/PSR restrictions. Signing youth players has been a key priority of the post-takeover era, with prospects like Yankuba Minteh and Garang Kuol joining the club.

As for Minteh, his future remains in limbo amid reports Newcastle could offload the youngster for £40million. Feyenoord are keen on re-signing the 19-year-old on loan, with Liverpool, now managed by Arne Slot, another potential destination.
