Former Newcastle United striker Andy Cole has backed James Trafford to succeed at St James’ Park.

The Burnley goalkeeper is understood to have already agreed personal terms on a move to Tyneside while the two clubs negotiate a transfer fee. Discussions have taken a backseat for now but are expected resume next month.

Newcastle are currently focused on selling players before June 30 in order to comply with Premier League Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR). Yankuba Minteh is in advanced talks over a move to French club Lyon while Callum Wilson, Kieran Trippier and Miguel Almiron are again linked with moves away after attracting interest in January.

And with Loris Karius released and Martin Dubravka expected to depart, signing a goalkeeper has become a priority in this summer’s transfer window. And rather than recruit a readymade replacement for Nick Pope, the Magpies are in favour of sourcing an understudy.

Newcastle’s pursuit of 21-year-old Trafford has provided mixed feelings among the fanbase after Burnley were relegated from the Premier League last season. Cole, however, believes he’d be a good signing for Eddie Howe’s men.

“I think he’ll do okay,” the ex-68-goal Newcastle No.9 told Betfred. “I watched him quite a bit the season before last when he was at Bolton and he was fantastic for them. Obviously Burnley went down last season, but you couldn’t pin it on him.

“He’s a young goalkeeper that’s got enormous talent and if you’re going for that kind of money at such a young age, then it means you’ve got talent. If he did go to Newcastle, he certainly wouldn’t let them down.

“The club has a few goalkeepers, so who’s ultimately going to be the number one? We have to wait and see.”

It was only 12 months ago that Trafford was talked about as one of the most the country’s most exciting young prospects after he played a starring role in England under-21s’ European Championship success. He went through the entire tournament without conceding a goal, saving a 98th-minute penalty against Spain in the final.

His performances with the Three Lions and on loan at Bolton Wanderers earned Trafford a £19million move to Burnley. The former Manchester City goalkeeper played the majority of the campaign but was dropped for the remaining 12 games.
