Callum Wilson may have played his final game for Newcastle United amid reported transfer speculation

Former Newcastle United midfielder Darren Ambrose believes Crystal Palace should sign Callum Wilson this summer.

Reports have suggested the 32-year-old could be set to leave the Magpies after four seasons. While few have questioned Wilson’s ability, his injury troubles have reared their head in recent times.

The England international started just nine Premier League games last season, with Alexander Isak bearing most of the responsibility up front. Wilson looked on top form when he returned from a two-month lay-off in May, only to break down again for the final few fixtures.

Ex-Toon midfielder Ambrose - who also played for Palace - has backed his two former clubs to strike a deal. He told talkSPORT: “I was thinking this when I saw the story come out (Wilson leaving) and I really don’t know. I think there’ll be suitors for sure in the Premier League. A team like Crystal Palace could do with somebody.

“He’s 32, so he’s not getting any younger. The end move is probably his final one but he might decide to go abroad. Saudi Arabia will be sniffing around I’m sure.”

Ambrose also claimed Wilson offers more than Dominic Calvert-Lewin - the man Newcastle were understood to be chasing before being priced out. Everton are believed to have wanted around £37million for the 27-year-old, who has 12 months left on his contract.

“Callum Wilson offers you more than Calvert-Lewin,” Ambrose added. “The pace that he (Wilson) has going in behind, he can hold it up and is good in the air as well. Calvert-Lewin is probably a little bit better in the air. He’s a lot taller but I really like Wilson. He’s an out-and-out goalscorer but, with both of these, they can’t stay fit.

“And £25million in the grand scheme of things, it’s crazy to say, but is not that much for a centre-forward. If you can keep Calvert-Lewin fit, he will offer you something. Put crosses in, he’ll get on the end of them.”
