Many are calling for England boss Gareth Southgate to name Anthony Gordon in his starting line-up against Denmark

Alan Pardew has dismissed suggestions Anthony Gordon should start England’s second group game against Denmark.

Gareth Southgate is under pressure to solve his left-flank conundrum following the 1-0 win over Serbia. Manchester City superstar Phil Foden copped most of the post-match flak for an anonymous display out wide.

The 24-year-old played wide left - an unfamiliar role from the one he fulfils at club level. Meanwhile, Newcastle United talisman Gordon was sidelined as an unused substitute - later admitting he was “itching” to get on.

England have a dilemma ahead of the clash with Denmark but former Toon boss Pardew believes Southgate should snub Gordon. The 62-year-old also named Crystal Palace winger Eberechi Eze, who is also waiting to make his debut at a major tournament, as a better option than Gordon.

“Not for me, no (whether Gordon should start against Denmark)," he told talkSPORT ahead of today’s game. "I personally think the team that starts will be the same team.

“You have the PFA Player of the Year (Foden), he needs to be in the team. For me, Trent (Alexander-Arnold) maybe needs to come out. That would be something that would take us forward.

“Perhaps bring Bellingham back and play Foden in his natural position. As Anthony Gordon was saying, he’s (Foden) a No.10. I don’t think he plays well off the side.

"We need to resolve that left-sided player. I don’t think Gordon is the one. (Eberechi) Eze might do a better job coming off that side and working the channel for.”
