Newcastle United make £20m call on Leeds United and Leicester City 'target'

Newcastle United are preparing for a hectic period in the transfer market as they aim to sell one current member of their squad to avoid falling foul of the Premier League’s profit and sustainability regulations.

Although the Magpies are not believed to be in as much danger as some of their rivals across the top tier, there is an understanding one player will be moved on to help United avoid a similar punishment to what Everton and Nottingham Forest suffered last season. As it stands, the Magpies reportedly have interest in the likes of Callum Wilson, Miguel Almiron and Martin Dubravka - but it is Gambia international Yankuba Minteh that seems to be edging closer to the exit door at St James Park.

The former Feyenoord loan star looked set for a move to Premier League rivals Everton over the weekend but that move is now off and either French club Lyon or Serie A side Roma now seem a more likely destination for a player that is yet to make a first-team appearance for Newcastle. There have been some suggestions Newcastle would looked to rake in around £40m for a player they signed for just over £6m last summer - but a fee of around £25m is now said to be a more realistic prospect.

United are also believed to have received tentative enquiries for a number of other players within Eddie Howe’s squad and are facing some major decisions over the coming weeks and months. Long-serving midfielder Sean Longstaff is now heading into the final year of his current deal at St James Park and is believed to be on the radar of Premier League newcomers Leicester City and Championship club Leeds United - although the latter’s failure to secure promotion have probably ended their hopes of landing the Magpies academy graduate.

Much like his stance on striker Callum Wilson, United boss Howe would like to retain Longstaff for the season ahead and it a keen admirer of the midfielder, suggesting he could push for an England call-up after impressing during the opening months of last season. Speaking after Longstaff scored in a Champions League win against Paris Saint-Germain, Howe said:  "I haven't spoken with Sean in any great detail about the England squad or his dreams and aims, but I'd encourage it for him because I think he is good enough. I think he's got everything depending on what system you want to play but for us, he perfectly fits the number eight role that we're using him in.“

However, Newcastle did have a major call to make on the future of the academy graduate and Football Insider have now claimed the Magpies are ‘willing to listen to offers’ for Longstaff during the summer transfer window and would bank any income as pure profit under the Premier League’s profit and sustainability regulations. A deal before the PSR deadline later this week is said to be ‘unlikely’ but United remain ‘open to the idea’ of allowing Longstaff to move on over the next two months
