Newcastle United forward Miguel Almiron has attracted reported interest from Saudi Pro League club Al-Shabab

Former Newcastle United defender Jose Enrique has urged Toon chiefs to sell Miguel Almiron this summer.

It was Rafa Benitez who persuaded Mike Ashley to break the club’s record fee five-and-a-half years ago. Almiron arrived as a relative unknown from MLS outfit Atlanta United.

Untested in European football, the Paraguayan has endured a patchy time on Tyneside, playing multiple positions under several managers. Almiron was, however, instrumental in Newcastle earning a top-four finish in 2022-23.

He also famously bagged the opener in last season’s iconic 4-1 win over Paris Saint-Germain. But just 30 goals in 209 appearances since his arrival is hardly a groundbreaking return.

With Almiron now 30, many believe now is the time to cash in given the FFP/PSR climate and reported Saudi Pro League interest. Reports have suggested Al-Shabab could reignite a proposed £25million bid that failed to get off the ground in January.

Speaking to Grosvenor Sport, ex-Newcastle defender Enrique insisted Almiron should move on to create wiggle room on the balance sheet. He said: “Miguel Almiron has been linked with a move to the Saudi Pro League and, unlike (Bruno) Guimaraes and (Alexander) Isak, he might be more ready to leave.

“While Almiron has been a fantastic player for Newcastle with an excellent work rate, his form has dipped recently. The season before last, he was sensational, but now Newcastle have an opportunity to get a good fee for him.

“Selling Almiron could help with financial fair play regulations and provide funds for a replacement. Although I would prefer him to stay, he seems the best option to leave compared to Guimarães and Isak.”
