Chelsea have appointed Enzo Maresca as their new head coach which in turn is set to hand Newcastle United a transfer blow.

Maresca said: “To join Chelsea, one of the biggest clubs in the world, is a dream for any coach. It is why I am so excited by this opportunity. I look forward to working with a very talented group of players and staff to develop a team that continues the club’s tradition of success and makes our fans proud.”

Meanwhile, Chelsea co-sporting directors Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley added: “We are delighted to welcome Enzo to Chelsea. He has proven himself to be an excellent coach capable of delivering impressive results with an exciting and identifiable style.

“Enzo has deeply impressed us in our discussions leading up to his appointment. His ambitions and work ethic align with those of the club. We thoroughly look forward to working with him.”

Maresca’s first signing as Blues boss is expected to be Tosin Adarabioyo on a free transfer.

As early as last week, Newcastle were clear frontrunners to sign the Fulham centre-back after tabling an offer last month. Adarabioyo was understood be impressed by Eddie Howe and the club’s project.

However, Chelsea’s approach caused the move to stall. And over the weekend, the 26-year-old decided to accept the Blues’ offer. He is due to undergo his medical and pen a long-term contract when he returns from holiday this week.

While Chelsea are believed to have offered a bigger wage package, sources in West London claim Adarabioyo is keen to work with Maresca. The pair have an understanding of how each other work from their respective spells at Manchester City.

With Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles sidelined until later this year with ACL injuries, Adarabioyo would have likely been a starter for Newcastle. At Chelsea, he faces high competition from Axel Disasi, Benoit Badiashile, Trevoh Chalobah, Levi Colwill and Wesley Fofana.
