Jordan Pickford seems to enjoy being taunted by Newcastle United fans at St James’ Park.

Sunderland fan Jordan Pickford has shocked fans by naming St James’ Park as the best atmosphere he’s played in.

Pickford stepped foot inside St James’ Park as a home player for the first time last night as England faced Bosnia & Herzegovina. It was the Three Lions’ first visit to the stadium since 2005 as they prepare for the European Championships in Germany later this month.

While the 30-year-old was subject to a few boos, the Geordies were largely on the Mackem’s side. That was undoubtedly a surreal experience for Pickford, who has taken countless of jibes from Magpies’ supporters during his seven years at Everton.

But before the game, Washington-born Pickford showed there were no hard feelings. When asked to choose the best atmosphere he had played in, he replied: “I know I get a lot of stick at St James' Park! But I know the atmosphere is always rocking.”

One X, formerly known as Twitter, user replied “legit shook by that” while another said “fair play to him, find it weird everyone’s still giving him all the stick tbh it’s years old”.

Meanwhile, another added: “You can support a rival and appreciate the support regardless of the banter stuff her gets. I think Pickford looks like the type of lad who enjoys even the hostile atmosphere”.

Elsewhere, Pickford’s former Everton teammate Anthony Gordon - now of Newcastle United - gave a somewhat controversial response given his Goodison Park connections.

“Other than St James' it's Anfield, by far,” Gordon said. “I think because I'm from the city [Liverpool], I grew up watching it but I think before the game when they [the fans] sing You'll Never Walk Alone, it's top level.”

Kieran Trippier, who captained England at St James’ Park on Monday night, choose Leeds United’s Elland Road.
