Eight-goal winger teases Premier League transfer - Newcastle United open to deal

Ryan Fraser isn’t hiding his hopes of returning to Southampton next season after they won promotion back to the Premier League.

The Saints confirmed their immediate return to England’s top-flight last week after beating Leeds United 1-0 in the Championship play-off final with Fraser playing 70 minute. In total, the 30-year-old made 44 appearances in all competitions, scoring eight goals and providing three assists during his season-long loan spell.

Fraser is surplus to requirements at Newcastle United having fallen out with head coach Eddie Howe halfway throughout the 2022-23 campaign. With one-year remaining on his contract, the Magpies are hoping to shift the winger off the wage bill permanently this summer.

And a return to St Mary’s is Fraser’s preferred choice. When asked if he will be a Southampton player next season, Fraser laughed and told the Daily Echo: "I'll try my best." 

In a thank you message to Saints fans, Fraser said “hopefully we can spend next season together”.

Posting on Instagram, Fraser said: Saints fans, what can I say. From the first minute I arrived at this amazing club, to this moment achieving our goal together of getting promoted to the Premier League. Celebrating with you all in the most incredible way at Wembley is something I could have only dreamed about.

“I can’t thank you all enough for the support and making this year one of the best of my life! “From the manager, who has helped the whole club come together in so many ways on and off the pitch, creating a family feeling for all of us. Every staff member that help push the club forward everyday. To my team mates, in which I have gained so many good friends. (except Arma).

“Who knows what this summer will bring hopefully we can spend next season together making more history but if not then I wish nothing but the best for this club going forward♥️”

The Scotland international has made 59 appearances for United since arriving as a free agent from AFC Bournemouth in 2020.
