Gareth Southgate has revealed Kieran Trippier suffered with cramp during England’s 1-0 win over Serbia.

Newcastle United supporters feared the worst when the 33-year-old went down in discomfort during the closing stages of the Three Lions’ opener. Trippier looked hurt, evoking memories of Michael Owen against Sweden in 2006.

A nervous look across the bench from Southgate hinted at a substitution being imminent. That would have been a bitter blow for England as Luke Shaw, the only natural left-back in the squad, is also injured.

However, Trippier received treatment on the sidelines before resuming play, completing the entire 90 minutes as the Three Lions held on. Speaking post-match, England manager Southgate revealed the Newcastle defender was suffering from cramp and his temporary withdrawal was nothing to be worried about.

“Kieran (Trippier) was just cramp,” he said. “As far as I know everyone has come through well.”

Southgate also insisted “suffering” against Serbia could stand England in good stead going forward. He added: “Today was just the finishing and a good save from the goalkeeper from the (Kane) header at the end. But that will come. I’m confident we will score goals. You’re playing against a back five. It’s not easy to create chances, but we did and, in the end, one was enough.

“That’s the reality of tournaments. They’re a strong team. We had to suffer a bit, which I think is really good for us, to come through and defend our box the way we did. The pressure was important for the group.”
