Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has emerged as a shock candidate for the England job

Jurgen Klopp is being discussed as a potential England manager should Gareth Southgate step down this summer.

The Three Lions have flattered to deceive in their opening two games at Euro 2024. Boos greeted the final whistle once England’s 1-1 draw with Denmark was confirmed on Thursday.

Southgate - whose contract expires this year - is taking charge of his fourth major tournament and many expect him to resign should the Three Lions fail. The FA, however, are keen to keep the 53-year-old until the next World Cup.

Reports have suggested Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe would be the FA’s ideal candidate to replace Southgate. The Toon boss previously downplayed the idea when grilled by reporters and former Manchester United defender Gary Neville.

But bookmakers still make Howe (6/1) among the favourites - behind only Graham Potter (3/1). However, a shock name, Klopp, has entered the running as a long shot - just weeks after his Liverpool exit.

While still a rank outsider, Oddschecker have revealed that 55 per cent of all bets placed on the next England manager following the draw were placed on Klopp. Spokesman Leon Blackman said: “Following England’s disappointing draw, one of our most popular football markets on Oddschecker has been the next England manager.

“With Southgate potentially leaving if England fail to win the tournament, his team’s poor performances have sparked punters to try and predict his replacement. One surprise name has emerged as a favourite with bettors on Oddschecker as Jurgen Klopp has taken a surge of bets to replace Southgate.

“Currently valued as an outsider at 20/1, maybe punters are wishful thinking by backing Klopp for the role. Nonetheless, 55 per cent of total bets placed since the England game is a significant share of the betting. In comparison, the current market favourite, Graham Potter, has taken only 16 per cent of the bets in the same time frame.”
