Newcastle United are reportedly weighing up a £25million move for Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin

Newcastle United supporters are divided on whether Eddie Howe should sign Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

The Telegraph claim Toon chiefs are closing in on a move for the Everton striker - a long-term target for the club. Calvert-Lewin has one year remaining on his Toffees contract and is valued at a reported £25million.

Despite struggling with injuries in recent years, the 26-year-old played 38 games for Everton last season to simmer fears about his fitness. Eight goals - including an 88th-minute penalty at St James’ Park - in a struggling Blues side is also viewed as a positive.

But Newcastle fans are far from unanimous about the news, with one pointing towards Calvert-Lewin’s previous injury troubles. A social media post read: “If Calvert-Lewin signs, fans will get behind him....we always do once a player pulls on that black and white shirt. But the injuries are a major concern.

“(Pedro) Neto and Calvert-Lewin have missed full seasons with their combined injuries over the past couple of years. It's a worry.”

Another aired concerns about Newcastle’s recruitment setup - insisting Calvert-Lewin does not “suit” Howe. He wrote: “Our style of play doesn’t suit players who aren’t physically fit and have poor injury records.

“Bar Bruno (Guimaraes) and (Anthony) Gordon, most of our players last season suffered lots of injuries and we brought in Calvert-Lewin? Something isn’t right with our recruitment if this is true.”

However, one fan dismissed the negativity, believing the England international could do a job for the Magpies. The response read: “I like him, think he'd be a good signing, always plays well against us. Looking at Everton forums they really rate him. Scored 8 goals last season in a poor Everton team.”
