Brighton were humbled 4-1 by Newcastle United on their last visit to St James’ Park

Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi has admitted he remains rattled by his side’s 4-1 hiding at St James’ Park last season.

Newcastle United put themselves on the brink of Champions League qualification - needing just one win after putting the Seagulls to the sword. The result was not as smooth sailing as the scoreline suggested, however, with Callum Wilson and Bruno Guimaraes bagging in the closing stages to rubber stamp the victory.

Denis Undav had halved the deficit six minutes into the second half, raising tension levels around Tyneside. But the late flurry sent Newcastle fans into party mode as they began dreaming about a Champions League return.

Brighton were on a high as well - regardless of the defeat - as they closed in on European football for the first time in their history. Both continental campaigns hundred the two clubs’ seasons but should stand them in good stead for the coming years. Speaking ahead of this weekend’s clash, De Zerbi confessed the St James’ Park defeat still haunts him - while hailing the famous atmosphere. He said: "St James' Park is the best stadium in the Premier League last season. Last season is still in my head because of the incredible atmosphere."

De Zerbi also confirmed star forward Joao Pedro - a former Newcastle target - is injured after suffering a setback on Friday. He told reporters: “Maybe Joao has a problem of the ankle and it is sad news for us. I don't know (if he will play again this season).

“Today it happened and I don't know if tomorrow he can play. I am sad for that as Joao is important, because Julio Enciso and Ansu Fati are not the best physical condition.”
