Newcastle United will allow Sean Longstaff to leave St James’ Park this summer, according to reports.

The North Shields native was an ever-present for Eddie Howe last season, playing 46 times across all competitions. Several outlets claimed in January that Longstaff could be on the move if his contract situation is not resolved.

As it stands, the 26-year-old has 12 months remaining on his Toon deal - worth a reported £40,000 per week. Talks were expected to take place over the summer to extend his stay beyond next season.

However, Football Insider claim Newcastle will listen to offers for the midfielder. Longstaff - who is closing in on 200 appearances for his boyhood club - would generate pure profit for the FFP/PSR balance sheet as an academy product.

Toon chiefs have reportedly slapped a £20million price tag despite his sensitive contract situation. Leeds United were touted as a potential destination but that appears unlikely after they failed to earn Premier League promotion.

Another possible suitor is Leicester City, who recently appointed Steve Cooper and are preparing for a top-flight return. Longstaff registered his best goalscoring figures last season with eight but drew criticism from supporters for several below-par performances.

Howe - who the midfielder credited with “saving” his Newcastle career - is thought to be keen on keeping him on Tyneside. But the FFP/PSR landscape could force the Magpies’ hand and, with Sandro Tonali returning from a 10-month suspension, they have an ample replacement. Joe Willock is also set to return following an injury-ravaged 2023-24.
