Newcastle United star is ‘best player in the Premier League’ as Eddie Howe frustration noted

Alexander Isak kick-started a stunning comeback win for Newcastle United at the weekend

Harry Redknapp has questioned whether there is another player better than Alexander Isak in the Premier League.

Another destructive brace put Sheffield United to the sword at St James’ Park. While his second was a cooler-than-ice penalty, his first to equalise showcased the ruthless, prolific streak with a first-time shot that whipped past Wes Foderingham.

Newcastle United stumped up a club-record £63million to sign Isak less than two years ago and supporters are already calling him their best striker since Shearer. The Swede has netted 23 goals across all competitions this season and appears to have overcome several injury niggles earlier in the campaign.

A double against bitter rivals Sunderland in January further endeared Isak to Newcastle fans - who are desperate for him to stay. The 24-year-old rejected talk about a potential move when grilled by the media last month, with reports suggesting Arsenal are keeping tabs.

Mikel Arteta needs a striker to complete his Gunners jigsaw but Isak, with four years left on his contract, would not come cheap. Former Tottenham Hotspur manager Redknapp does not believe there would be anyone better following the Toon star’s stunning brace on Saturday.

He also cited Eddie Howe’s injury crisis in defence as being the key frustration behind this season’s drop-off. Redknapp said: "Another week, another Alexander Isak star man, what a player this guy is! I’m not sure if there’s a better player in the country right now.

“He just looks like he’ll score a couple in every game, particularly at home. Newcastle have been very good going forward all season. Eddie will be frustrated with the amount of injuries at the back - that’s what’s really cost this side this season."
