Newcastle United are set to complete the signing of Serbian youth international Miodrag Pivas.

The 19-year-old centre-back — who can also play as a defensive midfielder — was spotted outside of St James’ Park on Wednesday ahead of joining on a free transfer. Pivas spent last season at Serbian Superliga side FK Jedinstvo Ub where he made 25 senior appearances.

Pivas, who will link-up with the Magpies’ under-21s side, recently received a glowing review from former Chelsea midfielder Nemanja Matic — comparing him to Manchester United legend Nemanja Vidic.

"A huge talent and serious potential,” said Matic. “If he continues this way, he's on the path to the national team. In my opinion, we haven't seen a player with such predispositions since Nemanja Vidic and Bradislav Ivanovic. A complete player and a top professional.”

Newcastle plan to bolster their academy significantly in the coming months having already signed 16-year-old Aaron Epia from Everton and 14-year-old midfielder CJ Afumuzor from Portsmouth.

The Magpies have signed several promising youngsters in recent seasons. Alex Murphy made his Premier League in November while the likes of Trevan Sanusi, Leo Shahar, Travis Hernes and Alfie Harrison impressed during their debut campaign.

Meanwhile, up to 13 players will leave the academy at the end of their contracts this week, including Amadou Diallo, Michael Ndiweni, Will Brown, Jude Smith, Jordan Hackett, Matthew Bondswell, Lucas De Bolle, Kyle Crossley, Dylan Stephenson, Shaun Mavididi, Taylor Ross and Carter Milmore.
