Yankuba Minteh could still leave Newcastle United before Sunday’s 2023-24 Premier League Profitability and Sustainability (PSR) deadline.

Newcastle appear to be under pressure to raise funds before June 30 or otherwise risk breaching PSR, which allows clubs to lose £105million over a rolling three-year cycle. Everton and Nottingham Forest have done so in recent seasons and both been handed points deductions.

The Magpies have reluctantly been looking to offload 19-year-old Minteh this week to make up for any potential shortfall. Over the weekend, the 19-year-old’s agent Bakary Bojang told Chronicle Live personal terms had been agreed with an unnamed club before it emerged that Everton was his preferred destination.

However, talks between the two clubs stalled earlier this week when the Magpies called off their pursuit of Dominic Calvert-Lewin due to the Toffees’ demands. It’s been suggested they put a £40m price tag on the striker’s head, despite him having just one-year left on his contract.

Minteh has since been pushed in the direction of Lyon but the suggestions are is the winger is refusing to discuss personal terms with the French club with a move to Goodison Park still very much his preference.

“Yankuba Minteh, one to watch in the next 24/48h as Newcastle are still trying to sell him due to Financial Fair Play restrictions,” transfer expert Fabrizio Romano posted on X this morning. Olympique Lyon made the best proposal, Minteh’s still keen on Everton move as priority. #NUFC and Minteh in contact to make decision soon.”

Speaking earlier this year, Minteh did say: “Ultimately, the Premier League is my goal. Newcastle United is the club that have a lot of confidence in me. I have no idea what the future looks like.”

Indeed, the Gambian is yet to - and may never - kick a ball for Newcastle. He was signed from Danish side Odense Boldklub for £7million last summer but was immediately loaned to Feyenoord, where he caught the eye with 11 goals in 37 appearances.

Newcastle fans have been torn on the prospect of losing Minteh. His value could explode in the coming years but, at the same time, the Magpies may never receive an offer as good should he fail to realise his potential.
