Newcastle United official squad update as double move confirmed - including former West Ham man

Eddie Howe has named a 29-man squad for Newcastle United’s post-season tour of Australia.

Hours after securing a Premier League top seven finish after beating Brentford 4-2, the Magpies jetted off Down Under. 17 players involved in the victory at the Gtech Community Stadium have been included in the squad, while the rest is namely made up by academy stars.

There is, however, inclusions for both Harrison Ashby and Garang Kuol. Ashby spent the 2023-24 campaign on loan at Championship side Swansea City and Kuol has been at Dutch outfit FC Volendam. Ashby featured in the Magpies’ pre-season - scoring in a 2-1 win at Rangers - while Kuol is hoping to make his debut.

The 19-year-old returns to Australia for the first time since joining Newcastle from A-League club Central Coast Mariners in January 2023. Kuol has played very little minutes during his loans at Hearts and Volendam since but has an opportunity to impress Howe ahead of the summer.

Both Fabian Schar and Sean Longstaff started the win at Brentford but have been left at home because of injury. Martin Dubravka, an unused substitute, also isn’t included. And there is no surprise over Anthony Gordon’s absence after the England international missed the visit to West London because of an ankle injury.

The youngsters included in the squad, some of whom will be familiar to Newcastle fans are Aidan Harris, Dylan Charlton, Ciaran Thompson, Travis Hernes, Ellis Stanton, Jay-Turner-Cooke, Ben Parkinson, Lucas De Bolle and Amadou Diallo. That is despite De Bolle and Diallo being released this summer.

Howe's side will kick off Melbourne’s 'Global Football Week against Tottenham Hotspur at the world-famous MCG on Wednesday (kick-off 7:45pm local time) before facing the A-League All Stars at the Marvel Stadium (kick-off 5:05pm local time).

"This is a great opportunity to showcase Newcastle United at two iconic venues in an iconic city as the club continues to grow globally,” said Howe.

"We are privileged to have so many incredible supporters around the world, and it's a chance to be able to play in front of many in Australia who wouldn't ordinarily get the chance to see the team. We look forward to engaging with our supporters in Melbourne and giving them the opportunity to feel closer to the club."
