Manchester City were credited with activating Bruno Guimaraes’ release clause by some Newcastle United ‘ITK’ accounts.

Newcastle United social media went into a mad frenzy on Wednesday evening with Bruno Guimaraes’ future once again at the centre.

The Brazilian’s £100million release clause is valid until the end of June and fans are eagerly counting down the days in the hope of keeping their prized asset.

But thanks to a couple of usual suspects on X - formerly known as Twitter - last night, many supporters were fearing his release clause had been activated.

By who? Manchester City, and those fake rumours even spread to their fans’ timelines. That, the reality of the digital world we now live in and, as here proves, the cesspit it can be.

The advice is, trust who you trust, and if you trust NewcastleWorld (you should by the way!), then you’ll have hopefully read our story on Monday that Man City are unlikely to trigger Guimaraes’ clause - as it stands.

But if you don’t want to take our word for it then maybe it’s worth reading in between the lines of the activity on Newcastle United’s official X account this morning.

Whilst this social media storm was ongoing, there was Guimaraes, totally oblivious as he took to the pitch for Brazil for their 1-1 draw against the USA at the Camping World Stadium in Orlando.

As a side note, that made a totally mockery of suggestions that a random private jet, booked to fly from Newcastle and Paris yesterday, had any relevance to Guimaraes’ future. PSG, by the way, aren’t in the race for the midfielder.

But anyway, back to the tale. The Magpies posted a photo of 26-year-old in his Brazil colours, captioned with a Brazil flag emoji. It may indeed have zero relevance, but you have to doubt that Newcastle would promote a player who hours earlier had apparently had his release clause triggered.

Social media can be fun and games yet sometimes infuriating. Roll on to the day Guimaraes’ future is back in Newcastle’s hands, although it’d be bold to think this ‘ITK’ stuff will suddenly go away.
