Newcastle United co-owners Mehrdad Ghodoussi and Jamie Reuben have reacted to Elliot Anderson’s move to Nottingham Forest.

Anderson was one of two players reluctantly sold on Sunday night as the Magpies made a desperate late attempt to comply with Premier League Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR). The accounting deadline was on June 30, and the £68million raised from the sales of Anderson and Yankuba Minteh to Brighton & Hove Albion are understood to have got Newcastle over the line.

Although United are set to avoid a potential points deduction, the departure of Anderson is tinged with plenty of sadness. The 21-year-old had been on his boyhood club’s books since the age of eight, going on to make 55 senior appearances.

The Whitley Bay-born midfielder has reflected on his time at Newcastle by posting a highlights video with the caption: “It’s been a dream come true to represent my club for 14 years.

“Pulling that black and white shirt on at St James Park is a moment that will never be taken away from me. I would like to thank everyone involved with the club and all the Geordies that have supported me throughout my journey.

“I will always support the club and wish nothing but the best for everyone involved. As one door closes another one opens. Thank you @NUFC.”

A number of his Newcastle teammates have since publicly messaged Anderson, including close friend Anthony Gordon who said “gunna miss you lad”. But those higher up at St James’ Park have also messaged Anderson with Ghodoussi replying “you’ll smash it” whilst Reuben said “brilliant player and guy. Wishing Elliot all the best at NFFC”.

The transfer fee gained from Anderson’s transfer represents a joint club-record sale by Newcastle after Andy Carroll’s move to Liverpool in 2011.

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe did not want to lose the former Scotland and England youth international but had little choice as it might have ended in the likes of Anthony Gordon, Alexander Isak and Bruno Guimaraes being offloaded.
