James Trafford has already addressed his future as Newcastle United look to strike a deal with Burnley.

James Trafford has already outlined his ambitions to play for a big club as Newcastle United look to wrap up a deal for the Burnley goalkeeper.

The Magpies have reportedly agreed personal terms with Trafford ahead of submitting a fresh offer. According to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, a £15million plus add-ons bid is being prepared, although the Clarets are rumoured to want closer to £20m.

Having struggled for form and suffered relegated from the Premier League last season, there has been a mixed response to United’s pursuit from fans. However, it was only 12 months ago that the 21-year-old was being discussed as one of the country’s most exciting young prospects.

Trafford played a starring role in England under-21s’ European Championship success last summer as he went through the entire tournament without conceding a goal, saving a 98th-minute penalty against Spain in the final.

It was then, in the month leading up the Euros, that Trafford revealed his ambitions to play Champions League football and represent England. And to do that, he hinted at needing to join a club like Newcastle. Eddie Howe’s side returned to Europe’s elite stage last year and will likely look to repeat that feat in the upcoming campaign.

“My long-term goal is playing in the Champions League and for England,” Trafford told the Daily Mail. “If you want to be in the Champions League you've got to be in the top four teams in England. Whether it's Man City or any other of the big clubs, I believe I will be at that level. Given the opportunity I'd be able to perform.”

Trafford, however, did speak about his reluctance to “sit on the bench”. It’s likely he would arrive at St James’ Park initially as an understudy to Nick Pope before challenging him for the No.1 jersey. The former Accrington Stanley loanee played back-up to Arijanet Muric during the latter part of last season after being dropped by then manager Vincent Kompany.

“The most important thing for goalies is to be playing and if you're not playing it is really tough,' Trafford added. “Next season I'll play every week. I can't sit on the bench.”
