Gareth Southgate believes the North East is home to some of the most passionate supporters in England.

The Three Lions boss is preparing his men for Euro 2024 - and their first warm-up clash takes place at St James’ Park. Newcastle United’s home will welcome Bosnia and Herzegovina on Monday, two weeks before England’s campaign gets underway against Serbia.

The national side last came to Tyneside in 2005, where they earned a 2-0 win over Azerbaijan. Recent years have seen England host games in Sunderland and Middlesbrough before major tournaments.

This time it is Newcaastle’s turn to back the Three Lions ahead of a highly-anticipated Euro campaign. Many make England favourites to end their 58-year trophy without a trophy.

Speaking before the clash at St James’ Park, Southgate hailed the region’s passion for the game and Newcastle’s “momentum” in recent seasons. He said: “Bringing the team on the road is something that we’ve enjoyed doing. Of course, to play at Wembley for your country is very special, so you never want to lose that aspect.

“We’ve got a nice contrast this week of being able to do both things. But we’re England. We represent everybody. I’ve obviously played in the North East and know how passionate people are here about their football.

“Newcastle, with the last couple of seasons they’ve had and the momentum behind them, but there’ll be a lot of Sunderland fans up there and Middlesbrough fans. It will be a brilliant night. (I'm) really looking forward to that.”
