Micah Richards believes Anthony Gordon is a shoo-in to make Gareth Southgate’s England squad this summer.

Newcastle United raised eyebrows when they stumped up £40million for the winger 15 months ago. Gordon was the only arrival that January, with Toon chiefs pouncing as soon as Everton - embroiled in financial uncertainty and a relegation battle - made him available.

That figure now appears a bargain after a stunning campaign for the Magpies. Another assist against Sheffield United took the 23-year-old to 19 Premier League goal contributions this season.

Southgate has been impressed and handed him his England debut versus Brazil last month after months of deliberation. A fearless display enhanced his Euro 2024 chances, with bookmakers now making him odds on to make the plane this summer.

Former Manchester City defender Richards has admitted to eating his words after ridiculing last January’s price tag. He told The Rest Is Football podcast: “How good is Gordon, though? Seriously. Remember when he was linked to Chelsea before he went to Newcastle and everyone was laughing at him?

“Now he is so consistent it’s ridiculous. Whether he is getting assists from crosses, taking on his man (or) defending for the team and I know you (Alan Shearer) put him in your England team moving forward for the Euros but, honestly, I wouldn’t disagree with you now.

“He can do absolutely everything. The improvement since the under-21s (England) when they won it has just been enormous. What a player he has turned out to be!”
