Elliot Anderson has issued an emotional message following his departure from Newcastle United.

The Whitley Bay-born midfielder has joined Nottingham Forest for £35million, equalling the club-record amount the Magpies have received for a player after Andy Carroll’s move to Liverpool in January 2011.

Anderson joined his boyhood club aged eight and went on to make 55 senior appearances. His departure comes at a time when United were in desperate need to raise funds in order to comply with Premier League Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

After penning a five-year contract at Forest, Anderson reflected on his time at Newcastle by posting a highlights video with the caption: It’s been a dream come true to represent my club for 14 years.

“Pulling that black and white on at St James’ Park is a moment that will never be took away from me. I would like to thank everyone involved with the club and all the Geordies that have supported me throughout my journey.

“I will always support the club and wish nothing but the best for everyone involved. As one door closes another one opens. Thank you @nufc 🖤🤍”

One of the first people to reply to the post was Anthony Gordon, who recently revealed Anderson was one of his best mates in football. Gordon wrote “gunna miss you lad” with a sad and love heart emoji.

Gordon, currently at Euro 2024 with England, scored 12 goals and provided 11 assists last season. To sum up the desperate nature of Newcastle’s PSR situation, the club floated the idea of selling Gordon to Liverpool if they got cash and Jarell Quansah in return.

However, the sale of Anderson and Yankuba Minteh to Brighton and Hove Albion for a combined £68million means Newcastle are set to keep hold of key assets such as Gordon, Alexander Isak and Bruno Guimaraes.
