13 of the best photos take you back to Newcastle in 1982

Let’s rewind to 1982 in Newcastle.

Can you remember what life was like in Newcastle in 1982?

In the UK, it was the year dominated by the Falklands War, with Margaret Thatcher in her fourth year as Prime Minister.

May 1982 saw the official opening of the Kielder Water reservoir in Northumberland- the largest artificial lake in the UK.

Newcastle United finished the 1981/82 season sitting in 9th in Division 2 before finishing 5th after 1982/83. It was the year Kevin Keegan joined the club from Southampton but his arrival did not immediately secure promotion for the Magpies.

That’s what was going on around the city and country, but what are your memories from 42 years ago?

Here we have 13 amazing photos- thanks to Newcastle Libraries- detailing what the city looked like four decades ago.

Do you think much has changed?

And do you think the city was better off then or now?

There are so many shops, restaurants and pubs chronicled in these snaps which are no longer around today- which of them do you wish could make a return to the city?

Take a look and let us know your thoughts.
